Leah Day at The Free Motion Quilting Project did a wonderful post about copyrighting quilting.
Its a long post- but a great one.
Copyright issues seem to be cropping up with increasing frequency in the quilting world and I for one would like to try to stem this flow, or at least open your eyes, to the very real threat looming for our craft.
What is this threat? Where is it coming from?
It is coming from within our own ranks. Quilters with a certain penchant for copyright and legal wrangling are turning our open, creative craft into a mine field of rules, regulations, licensing, attribution, and copyright lockdown that it's enough to make anyone set down their rotary cutter and sell their sewing machine.
And these particular Copyright Nazis (I really can't think of a better name for them) are not just vocal, they are flexing their arm powerfully enough to include copyright notices within quilt shows.

Books feeding the kid
I wanted to share this from my facebook page to keep it somewhere else. I love my dads response!
what would you do?
so Dave went to get Zeke up this morning and dicovered that one of his books had pages ripped out. (I think Zeke showed him that)
So i went in and asked Zeke what happened to the book and he said "zekey broke it"
I then Asked what happened to the pages. Zeke replied "(pointing at mouth) mouth, Zekey ate it"
what do you with that?

my purple heart
The quilt guild that I go to was having a class using the "twister ruler"
We had to have the top this far along before class.
I have said before that I like this purple and green combo. Some of this you may recognize from this post
This is the ruler.
You had to line up the lines on the seams and cut carefully around it. This is not as easy as it sounds since you couldnt move the ruler. Many people jumped from one side of the table to the other. Me? I have taught myself to use the rotary cutter in my left hand :) It works ok for the smaller cuts.
so after cutting out all the squares- they needed to be sewn together
and add the border
(there is one twisted the wrong way- oh well)
I love the back of the quilt with all the seams
Then finish it off!
Zeke likes to think all quilts are for him.
I had to piece the back from my leftovers. There wasnt much let to work with :)
I quilted it using the walking foot on my machine.
(i dont know which side I like better) |
signed and you can see that after I bound it (I had put the binding on the front first and I dont like that!) that I used a fancy flower stitch from my machine.
This quilt is going to be for squid when she is born.

my first bag
I have a craft group that tries to meet each friday. It doesn't always happen.
We are very informal. Really its just a reason to get together and eat some yummy foods that people bring.
I had never made anything with a zipper before- so this is my first attempt- and I think it turned out pretty good.

Everyone brings their own craft. Most of the time people bring knitting or crochet. Its not easy for me to bring my quilting- but sometimes I lug my machine around.
Last night I had a quilt guild meeting and workshop on how to use the "twister ruler" (more on that after the quilt is done) so I had my machine in the back of the van.
This was perfect since one of the ladies - Emily- offered to teach a couple of us how to make bags/ put in zippers.
I hauled out my machine and all my paraphernalia (which isnt that bad) so we had 2 machines and a serger to use.
This is what I made:
its a small pouch 7x6.5.
I figured out how to make it so the print remained directional as well.

Thank you so much Emily!
baby quilt for Anna
Anna was one of the 5 baby quilts that I needed to make for March/April.
She is actually due on Sunday the 18th I think.
I like the animals that are shown with him :)I did cheat on hers by using a panel and a piece of fabric for the backing.
I did the wavy quilting pattern with the walking foot on my machine.
